Wilmington, IL came together on Saturday, April 18th for the 2026 Baseball & Softball Opening Day—and despite a rainy start, the day turned into a windy, sunny celebration full of energy, teamwork, and community pride.
With 13 scrimmages played throughout the day, the fields were filled with young athletes ready to kick off the season. The Wilmington Baseball & Softball Association (WBSA) also welcomed their friends from Elwood Steelcats EBSA, making the day even more special with shared games and community spirit.
Opening Day was also a time to honor and remember. The WBSA Board recognized the Dziuban family in memory of Nick Dziuban, a lifelong Wildcat. A sign in his honor will remain at the Lodi Vercelli field throughout the season before being presented to his family.
The event featured an appearance by Coach Jeff Reents and the 2A State Champion Wilmington High School football team, giving young athletes the chance to connect with local role models and be inspired both on and off the field.
One of the most meaningful moments of the day was celebrating this year’s Grand Marshal, Floyd Combes. Since 1990, Floyd has dedicated his time to Wilmington athletics—still helping with the high school varsity softball team and coaching his great-grandchildren in t-ball. His impact across generations makes him a truly deserving honoree.
